Week: Saturday 25th May 2024 – Friday 31st May 2024.

Cemlyn delivered 2 new year ticks this week.  A Red-rumped Swallow at Plas Cemlyn, Cemlyn - then over nearby fields (25th) - will be only the 3rd record for Anglesey after 1 on the 11th May 2004 at South Stack and 1 on the 4th May 2008 at Porth Wen.  Later in the week, 7 Egyptian Geese were at Cemlyn (29th).  Together, they take the Anglesey year to date list up to 203.

Elsewhere, 2 Pomarine Skuas seen off 000The Range, Holyhead (31st) were both notable and just reward for Ken Croft after many hours spent seawatching over the past few weeks.

·       7 at Cemlyn (29th).

Common Scoter

·       15 flew past The Range over a 2hr seawatch (25th).

·       9 flew past The Range over a 3hr seawatch (30th).

Eider

·       4 at Penmon Point (28th).

·       5 at Port Penmon (28th).

·       9 at Afon Lleiniog (29th).

·       4 at Trwyn y Penrhyn, Penmon (30th).

Goosander

·       6 off Beaumaris promenade (29th).

Waders:

Curlew Sandpiper

·       1 at Cemlyn (25th-27th).

European Golden Plover

·       2 on Tyn Llan fields, Cemlyn (18th).

Common Ringed Plover

·       21 at the Alaw estuary (29th).

Sanderling

·       Up to 8 at Cemlyn (8 on 25th, 1 on 26th).

·       5 at Hen Borth, near Cemlyn (26th).

Dunlin

·       26 at the Alaw estuary (29th).

Ruff

·       1 at Llyn Llywenan (26th).

Whimbrel

·       1 at the beach at Tyn Llan, Cemlyn  (25th).

·       2 flew past The Range over a 2hr seawatch (25th).

Bar-tailed Godwit

·       6 flew past Trwyn y Penrhyn, Penmon (30th).

Seabirds & gulls:

Pomarine Skua

·       2 seen off The Range, Holyhead (31st).

Puffin

·       1 at Penmon Point (28th).

Black Guillemot

·       1 at Penmon Point (28th).

·       1 at Porth Penmon (29th).

Manx Shearwater

·       250 flew past The Range over a 2hr seawatch (25th).

·       1176 flew past The Range over a 3hr seawatch (30th).

·       968 flew past The Range over a 3hr seawatch (31st).

Lesser Black-backed Gull

·       54 at the Alaw estuary (29th).

Kittiwake

·       85 flew past The Range over a 3hr seawatch (31st).

Divers & Grebes:

Passerines & others:

Red-rumped Swallow

·       1 photographed at Plas Cemlyn, Cemlyn then seen over nearby fields (25th).

Barn Swallow

·       94 flew west at South Stack (25th).

Tree Pipit

·       1 at Holyhead (25th).

Spotted Flycatcher

·       39 at Holyhead – 9 at South Stack, 17 at Holyhead mountain and 13 at Holyhead Breakwater Country Park (25th).

·       Up to 3 opposite Cafnan farm, Cemlyn (3 on 26th, 2 on 25th).

·       1 at Llanfairynghornwy churchyard (25th).

·       8 at Holyhead – 2 at South Stack, 2 at Holyhead mountain and 4 at Holyhead Breakwater Country Park (26th).

·       2 at Cemlyn (26th).

Cuckoo

·       1 flew over the A55 near Bryngwran (26th).

·       1, possibly 2, at Holyhead Breakwater Country Park and South Stack (26th).

·       1 heard from Pencarreg, Cemlyn (29th).

Whinchat

·       Female at Tyn Llan, Cemlyn (29th).

Reed Warbler

·       1 at Hen Borth (27th).

Northern Wheatear

·       4 between Cemlyn and Hen Borth (25th).

·       2 at South Stack (25th).

Lesser Redpoll

·       2 at The Range (2 on 25th, 1 on 27th).

Chough

·       33 at South Stack (27th).

Raptors:

Osprey

·       1 at the Cefni estuary (27th).

Red Kite

·       1 over the B5109 between Pentraeth and Talwrn (25th).

·       1 over Talwrn (29th).

Herons, Egrets & allies:

Cattle Egret

 

·        3 at the Alaw estuary (29th).
