Friday 23 February 2024

Week: Saturday 17th February 2024 - Friday 23rd February 2024.

A male Common Crossbill seen singing from atop of a Corsican pine at Newborough forest (19th) was the only new species for the week.  It takes the cumulative year to date total to 148.

A Black-throated Diver close in at Holyhead harbour allowed for all the diagnostic features to be noted.  Initially reported on the 15th, the bird was relocated on the 19th and was still present on the 23rd.  Whilst Holyhead harbour has held up to 6 birds in the ‘70s (per @angleseybirdman), numbers have dwindled such that this is the 1st since 1 in 2019, with the 1 in 2018 and 1 in 2012.

A count of 10 Great Egrets at Cors Ddyga (19th & 23rd) was impressive and can only lead to speculation as to whether they will breed in the not-too-distant future.
