Week: Saturday 29th April - Friday 5th May 2023

Bird of the week was a Pectoral Sandpiper found at Cors Ddyga RSPB (29th).  Not only is it scarce, with just 19 records for Anglesey having been accepted by the Welsh Birds Rarity Committee (2 others are being followed up), it was also the first April record for the island.  If the other 2 records are accepted to take the total to 22 (including this week’s bird), then 1 will have occurred in April, 2 in May, 1 in July, 4 in August, 13 in September and 1 in October.  It is understood to be the 2nd earliest for Wales after 1 at the Gwent levels on 03/04/1976.  It looks to have only been the 4th record for the UK & Ireland in 2023.  All in all, a noteworthy record.

Aside from the Pectoral Sandpiper, there were 3 new additions to the year list - Spotted Flycatcher (3rd), Hobby (4th) and Roseate Tern (5th).  Collectively, they take the 2023 year list up to 194.

Apart from the new additions to the list, it was a good week for both Lesser Whitethroat and Swift which featured in a number of sighting reports.  2 Wood Sandpipers, a Little Gull, a Black Redstart and an Arctic Skua were also noteworthy.  Wader numbers are reported to be building on the Alaw estuary.
