Friday 1 March 2024

Week: Saturday 24th February 2024 – Friday 1st March 2024.

A 1st winter male Snow Bunting found by Ken Croft at Soldier’s Point / Holyhead breakwater (27th-1st) is thought to be of the nominate form Plectrophenax nivalis nivalis which originates from Greenland east to western Russia, including Scandinavia.  Most sightings of Snow Bunting on Anglesey involve birds from Iceland of the P. n. insulae sub-species.  If accepted by the Welsh Birds Rarity Committee, it will become only the 11th record for Anglesey following 5 (m & 4f/imm) at Soldier’s Point on the 25/11/12, 2 at Cemlyn (m & f/1st cal year) on the 09/03/14, 1 at Tyn Llan, Cemlyn (f/ 1st cal year) on the 16/11/14, 1 at Tyn Llan, Cemlyn (f) on the 28/11/16 and 1 at Red Wharf Bay (m) from the 22/01/20 – 17/02/2020.  This week’s bird is the 1st for Anglesey during 2024 and takes the cumulative year list to date up to 149.

With the arrival of Garganey, House and Sand Martins, Swallows and Little Ringed Plover elsewhere in the UK – and a winter plumaged Puffin seen from Bangor Pier (26th) – the next few weeks should provide a steady stream of new additions to the year list.
