Week: Saturday 4th March - Friday 10th March 2023

There were 4 new additions to the 2023 year list – the highlight being a drake Smew at Llyn Cefni (4th-10th) – you have to go back to 2006 for the last, when 2 drakes were on Llyn Padrig.  Following some very early records of Puffins on the cliffs at Bempton on the North Yorkshire coast during late February, there was an early local record with one being reported at South Stack (5th).  2 Common Crossbills flew over South Stack (8th) and finally a probable Sandwich Tern seen over Beddmanarch Bay (9th) was confirmed the following day.  There was a report of a Swallow at Cors Ddyga (5th), but in the absence of knowing who had it, and whether Sand Martin had been specifically excluded, it will have to await a few more days before being added to this year’s list.

The 4 new additions take the year list to date to 157.  There are probably another 38 certainties in respect of spring - autumn migrants to be added over the next few months, but then there will need to be around 29 ‘maybes, long-shots and unexpected’ species if this year’s year list is to rival that of 2022.  A good start to the year, but still all to play for!
