… Oh where, oh where, are the Spoonies hiding?  ….

Herons, Egrets and allies:

Spoonbill is a scarce migrant to Anglesey with 1 or 2 records in most years.  There were just the 2 reports in 2020, a bird at Valley on the 16th May and then the same or another at Plas Bog, near Bryngwran on the 24th June.  2021 has been somewhat of a bumper year with sightings of 15 birds albeit that some duplication is possible or indeed likely.  This year’s sightings started off with 2 seen over RSPB Cors Ddyga on the 29th April which then appeared to land near Llangaffo.  There was then a sighting of just 1 bird at RSPB Cors Ddyga on the 7th May and 1 at the same site on the 24th May.  2 were then seen at 4-mile bridge on the 30th May, then 3 in flight over RSPB Cors Ddyga on the 23rd June, with 1 seen over Holyhead Bay and then Beddmanarch Bay on the 23rd August.  An immature bird was then seen on the 16th October, firstly on the mitigation pool, Inland Sea before moving on to the shores of the Inland Sea itself as viewed from the Anchorage Hotel.  Returning to RSPB Cors Ddyga, 3 were seen in flight on the 8th November then this week 1 was seen there in flight on the 15th December.  All of which begs the question, have there been birds on the island since the spring and if so, where have they been hiding?

There is perhaps a danger of becoming a little blasé about sightings of Great Egrets; it wasn’t so long ago that they were a major rarity on the island, but now they might be expected when starting off a new year list on New Year’s day!  This week, birds were seen at RSPB Cors Ddyga (2 on 11th & 17th, 1 on 13th&15th), 1 in a field north of the B5111 between Llannerchymedd and Rhosybol (12th) and 1 in a field near Llyn Llywenan (15th).

Swans, Geese & Ducks:

Sightings of Whooper Swans included up to 4 birds at RSPB Cors Ddyga (4 on 13th & 17th, 2 on 11th) and 6 near Trewan Common (15th).  A coordinated low water count by 6 individuals of the Inland Sea/Beddmanarch Bay/Holyhead Bay areas (14th) produced 445 Pale-bellied Brent Geese, 110 Shelduck, 642 Wigeon, 125 Teal, 196 Pintail, 25 Goldeneye and 27 Red-breasted Mergansers.  Elsewhere, 3 White-fronted Geese – presumably of the Greenland sub-species – flew over Coedana (15th).  There was some 200+ Northern Shoveler at RSPB Cors Ddyga (17th), 13 Goldeneye at Llyn Maelog (13th) and 3 drake Goldeneye at Beddmanarch Bay (16th).  Sightings of Goosander included 1 at Llyn Maelog (13th) and 9 - 5 males and 4 females - at Llyn Coron (15th).  8 Red-breasted Mergansers were seen in Beddmanarch Bay (16th).

Divers & Grebes:

Sightings of Great Northern Diver included 1 in Holyhead Harbour (12th), 1 at Beddmanarch Bay (15th-16th) and 1 at the Inland Sea (14th-16th).  A Red-throated Diver was seen in Holyhead harbour (17th).  Up to 2 Slavonian Grebes were seen at Beddmanarch Bay (2 on 16th, 1 on 15th), with 1 on the Inland Sea (14th, 15th).  4 Little Grebes and 13 Great crested Grebes were in the Inland Sea/Beddmanarch Bay/Holyhead Bay areas (14th).

Passerines and others:

A slow week, but last week’s Snow Bunting remained in the vicinity of Holyhead Harbour (11th-12th), while Hooded Crows were seen at South Stack (13th) and the Alaw estuary (16th).  c. 200,000 Starlings were seen early morning to leave their roost at RSPB Cors Ddyga (11th).

… Green 236 …

Passerines and others:

Perhaps the most interesting bird of the week was a Scandinavian Rock Pipit that was found on the wrack zone adjacent to the road bridge at Malltraeth (5th-6th).  The bird had a dark green darvic ring on its right leg with the inscription 236 in white and a metal ring on its left.  Subsequent checks established that it was part of a ringing scheme in Norway, with the bird having been ringed as an adult male on the 1st April 2021 at Maletangen – a distance travelled of some 787 miles.  It is the 3rd return of a Rock Pipit from this scheme for Wales, with 64 from England and 20 from Scotland.  Also present on the same patch of wrack was a Dutch ringed Chaffinch.

Snow Buntings were seen at Traeth yr Ora (7th) and Holyhead Harbour (6th, 9th, 10th), while Black Redstarts were seen at Moelfre (4th) and Silver Bay, Rhoscolyn (5th).  2 Water Pipit were at RSPB Cors Ddyga (5th) and a very late Barn Swallow was at Malltraeth village (5th).  Hooded Crows were seen at South Stack (5th) and Henborth (10th).  A Great Spotted Woodpecker seen flying along Holyhead Breakwater (9th) was out of its natural habitat!

Waders:

The number of Black-tailed Godwits at RSPB Cors Ddyga continues to increase to what are unprecedented numbers in respect of Anglesey, with the latest estimate being of 560 birds and a count of just part of the flock amounting to 431 birds (6th).  Purple Sandpipers were seen at a number of sites with 4 at Moelfre (4th), 3 at Trearddur Bay (5th), 1 at Silver Bay, Rhoscolyn (5th) and 1 at Soldiers Point, Holyhead (6th).  Holyhead Bay held 35 Grey Plover (6th) and 3 Knot (6th), while nearby there were 2 Greenshank in Beddmanarch Bay (9th).

Divers & Grebes:

Great Northern Divers were seen at a number of locations including 1 on the Menai Strait between Plas Newydd and the Britannia Bridge (4th), 1 in Holyhead Harbour (4th – 10th), 1 past RSPB South Stack (9th) and 3 between Holyhead Bay and Penrhos (9th).  A Red-throated Diver was at Silver Bay, Rhoscolyn (5th).  A Slavonian Grebe was seen on the Inland Sea (5th) and up to 33 Great-crested Grebes were in Holyhead Bay (33 on 9th, 30 on 8th, 22 on 6th).

… Storm Arwen delivers a phalarope and multiple Little Gulls  …

Waders:

In terms of scarcity, a Grey Phalarope found in Red Wharf Bay (28th) was the scarcest bird and it was Anglesey’s 2nd record of the year after a bird found at Cemlyn on the 16th July.

Grey Phalarope, Red Wharf Bay, 28th November – by Rhys Jones

Good numbers of Black-tailed Godwits continue to be seen with the most easily accessible birds being on the Gorad flood, Valley where up to 70 birds were reported (29th).  The Common Sandpiper previously reported in Holyhead Harbour was seen again near the outflow at Soldier’s Point (1st) and a Purple Sandpiper was at Borthwen, Rhoscolyn (3rd).

Gulls and Terns:

Good numbers of Little Gulls were seen with 6 seen in the lee of Ynys Moelfre (27th) and later 8 birds, including 3 1st winter birds off Traeth Bychan (27th).  Whilst it is likely that some of the same birds may have been seen from both sites, they nonetheless represents very good counts for the island.  Elsewhere an adult winter plumaged Little Gull was seen in a mixed flock of gulls in the more sheltered waters off Gallows Point, Beaumaris (27th) with the flock also including 1 adult Mediterranean Gull – all ‘scoped from the relative comfort of the car from the layby west of the point (a handy site for inclement weather, with an impressive high tide roost of Oystercatchers and always with the possibility of a scarce grebe or seaduck).

Seabirds:

Up to 4 Black Guillemots were seen in Holyhead Harbour (4 on 3rd, 3 on 30th).  A possible arcticus sub-species of Black Guillemot was seen and photographed off Bangor pier (2nd) and would have been viewable from the Anglesey site around the Gazelle.

Divers & Grebes:

2 Great Northern Diver were seen off Penmon (28th), with another in Holyhead Harbour (30th).  The harbour also held a Red-throated Diver (30th, 3rd).  Up to 2 Slavonian Grebes were seen in Beddmanarch Bay (2 on 3rd, 1 on 28th) and 1 on the Inland Sea (2nd), although local birders believe that there have been at least 5 birds in the area.

Passerines and others:

Up to 2 Snow Buntings were on the shingle ridge at Llanddona beach (2 on 28th, 1 on 29th) and the male Black Redstart was seen again at Octel, Amlwch Port (3rd).

Snow Bunting, Llanddona beach, 29th November – by J Martin Jones

A late Barn Swallow was at Rhoscolyn (28th) and a leucistic Common Starling was at Gorad beach, Valley (28th).  Common Kingfishers were seen on the seaward side of Cadnant bridge, Menai Bridge (27th), on the Afon Cefni at The Dingle, Llangefni (27th) and at Holyhead harbour (3rd).   A Hooded Crow was at The Range, South Stack (29th) and another was at the Alaw estuary (2nd).

Swans, Geese & Ducks:

Sightings of Whooper Swans included 23 birds off the Llangefni to Llanerchymedd road (1st), 5 at Cemlyn (28th) and 4 seen to fly over RSPB South Stack (29th).  23 Greenland White-fronted Geese were seen at RSPB Cors Ddyga (2nd), while reports of Pale-bellied Brent Geese included 32 birds at Lleiniog (27th) and 8 at Traeth Lligwy (28th).  The drake Long-tailed Duck was seen again off Benllech seafront (29th-30th), with sightings of Eider including birds off Lleiniog (27th), Trwyn y Penrhyn, Penmon (27th) and 3 off Benllech seafront (30th).  182 Pintail were counted at the Alaw estuary (2nd).

… scarce seabirds keep on coming …

Seabirds:

Whilst Storm Arwen hasn’t yet delivered anything of interest (there is still time in the forthcoming days), the northerly bias to the wind in the early part of the week produced some late skua action with 3 species seen from Point Lynas (21st) – a juvenile Long-tailed Skua, a Great Skua and a Pomarine Skua.  A single Fulmar flew past Point Lynas (25th) and 4 Black Guillemots were in Holyhead Harbour (22nd). There have been 2 reports of Brϋnnich’s Guillemot elsewhere in the UK today, so perhaps it would be worth brushing up on the finer identification features!

Passerines and others:

It was another good week for Black Redstarts with a male at the former Octel site, Amlwch Port (20th), 2 female / immature birds on the rooftop of Plas Newydd (21st) and 1 at St Cybi’s, Holyhead (22nd).  The Snow Bunting was still at the Trwyn, Cemlyn (22nd), with another at South Stack (22nd).  Chiffchaffs showing characteristics of the tristis sub-species were seen at The Range, Holyhead (20th) and at Octel water treatment plant, Amlwch (22nd) – the latter was heard to call on two occasions.  A collybita Chiffchaff was at Holyhead Breakwater Country Park (22nd).  Up to 2 Water Pipits were at RSPB Cors Ddyga (2 on 20th, 23rd, 1 on 21st) and a Brambling was seen to fly over Amlwch Port (24th).  Up to 4 Barn Swallows at Tregele (4 on 20th, 1 on 22nd-23rd) were a little unseasonal, as was a singing Dipper on the Afon Cefni, near the Council Offices, Llangefni (20th).  2 Dippers were also on the upper reaches of the Afon Cefni at the road bridge at Bodffordd (22nd).

Waders:

The most intriguing feature of the wader sightings were just how many Black-tailed Godwits were seen.  The flooded fields at RSPB Cors Ddyga seem to be providing good conditions and held 200+ birds (200+ on 24th, 170 on 21st, 107 on 20th), while up to 80 birds were on the Gorad flood, Valley (80 on 25th, 46 on 23rd) with smaller numbers on the flood off Lon Spencer.  Last week’s Common Sandpiper was seen again at Holyhead Harbour (22nd) and up to 7 Purple Sandpipers were at Trearddur Bay (7 on 23rd, 3 on 21st).  There were 2 Greenshank at Llyn Penrhyn (25th) and 22 Redshank at Traeth Dulas (25th).  A Jack Snipe was at RSPB Cors Ddyga (20th) and 2 Woodcock were flushed from the steps down to Elin’s Tower, RSPB South Stack (22nd).

Divers & Grebes:

Sightings of Great Northern Diver included 1 past Cemlyn (21st), 1 past Point Lynas (21st), 1 past Point Lynas (25th) and 1 in Holyhead Bay (23rd).  There were good numbers of Red-throated Divers to be had during sea-watching sessions with 35 past Point Lynas (21st), 32 past Point Lynas (25th) and 6 birds past Cemlyn (21st).  Others were seen in Holyhead Harbour (20th) and Holyhead Bay (20th).  3 Slavonian Grebes were at Beddmanarch Bay (22nd-23rd), with 2 birds at the Inland Sea (21st, 23rd).

Swans, Geese & Ducks:

2 Whooper Swans were at RSPB Cors Ddyga (20th-22nd), while 2 Barnacle Geese were on the flooded fields north of Lon Spencer, Valley together with a Barnacle x Snow hybrid (23rd-24th).  c.30 Pale-bellied Brent Geese were at 4 mile bridge (24th).  3 Eider were in Holyhead Bay (23rd) and 1 was seen to fly past Point Lynas (25th).  84 Pintail were on the Inland Sea (21st) and c.80 Wigeon were on the Lon Spencer flood (26th).

Gulls and Terns:

2 Little Gulls flew past Point Lynas (25th), while 2 Mediterranean Gulls were seen at RSPB Cors Ddyga (20th).

Raptors:

Up to 6 Marsh Harriers were at RSPB Cors Ddyga (6 on 23rd, 5 on 21st, 3 on 20th), which also had 2 reports of a Hen Harrier (21st, 23rd).  Sightings of Merlin included 1 at Traeth Dulas (24th) and 1 hunting coastal fields near Bodorgan (25th).  A Red Kite was seen to glide over the High Street, Llangefni (22nd) – unthinkable even 30 years ago, how the fortune of Red Kites have changed for the better.

Herons, Egrets and allies:

6 Great Egrets were at the east end of Llyn Alaw and the surrounding fields (22nd), with up to 2 birds at RSPB Cors Ddyga (2 on 21st, 1 on 22nd).  21 Little Egrets were at the Inland Sea, Holyhead (21st).  Up to 2 Great Bitterns were seen at RSPB Cors Ddyga (2 on 20th, 1 on 21st).

Forthcoming week – 27th November  – 3rd December?

There was a Richard’s Pipit at the Braint estuary (27th) in 2000 and a Rose-coloured Starling at Llangristiolus (30th) in 2005.  There was a Long-billed Dowitcher on the Inland Sea and Alaw estuary (28th) in 2006 and two records of Green-winged Teal – a bird at RSPB Cors Ddyga (29th) in 2006 and a bird at Llyn Trafwll (2nd) in 1990.

Intro:

… a new species for the year …

Seabirds:

Whilst Anglesey does well for a range of Auks, with breeding Puffins, Common Guillemots, Black Guillemots and Razorbill, the diminutive Little Auk is a far rarer species with only a handful of sightings over the past years.  Whilst it has been a pretty good year for them off the east coast of England, it wasn’t really on the radar for one to be found off the Anglesey coast this week.  But one did turn up – and it was no fly-by of a coastal headland - being found by a JCB driver (other makes of mechanical digger are available) on a building site at Trearddur Bay (18th), before being taken first to RSPB South Stack to be checked over before being released at Porth Dafarch.

A Black Redstart was seen at Cemlyn, initially on the old barn by the west car park before getting on the wall surrounding Bryn Aber (13th), while a male Black-Redstart was seen again at the former Octel plant, Amlwch Port (13th & 19th).  A Snow Bunting was seen on the sandy beach to the east of the Trwyn, Cemlyn (13th).

There were a few warblers to be had, the pick of the bunch being a Lesser Whitethroat at Soldier’s Point, Holyhead (15th).  Blackcaps were seen at Soldier’s Point, Holyhead (13th) and at Holyhead Breakwater County Park (14th).  A Cetti’s Warbler was heard calling at Llyn Coron (19th).  Chiffchaffs – some showing an eastern influence and considered by some as being good for tristis – were seen at the former Octel plant, Amlwch Port (13th), the willows behind the beach at Traeth Lligwy (13th) and at Soldier’s Point, Holyhead (14th&15th).  Up to 2 Water Pipits were at RSPB Cors Ddyga (2 on 13th, 1+ on 19th), while up to 3 Barn Swallows were at Tregele (13th-19th) with 1 at RSPB Cors Ddyga (19th).  There is a sizeable roost of Starlings at RSPB Cors Ddyga with the number of birds being said to be in excess of 100,000 (16th) and in excess of 1 million (19th) – whatever the exact detail, there are likely to be some impressive murmurations.  A Hooded Crow was again at The Range, Holyhead (16th).

Waders:

A very late Common Sandpiper was at salt island, Holyhead harbour (19th) and was scrutinised closely to eliminate Spotted Sandpiper.  Up to 5 Purple Sandpipers were at Cemlyn (5 on 13th, 1 on 14th, 2 on 15th), 9 Knot were at Beddmanarch Bay (13th), 7 Knot were at the Alaw estuary (17th) and 11 Sanderling were at Traeth Lligwy (13th).  Records of Dunlin included 263 at the Alaw estuary (17th), 92 at Beddmanarch Bay (13th) and 40 at Traeth Lligwy (13th).  There were 40 Ringed Plover at Traeth Lligwy (13th) and 29 at the Alaw estuary (17th).  59 Grey Plover were at the Alaw estuary (17th), with 18 at Beddmanarch Bay (13th).  There were 400 Golden Plover off the Trwyn at Cemlyn (15th), with 106 at the Alaw estuary (17th).  The latter site also held 331 Lapwing (17th), 28 Bar-tailed Godwit (17th), 88 Curlew (17th) and 155 Oystercatcher (17th).  Sightings of Greenshank included 4 at Church Island, Menai Bridge (15th) and 3 at the Alaw estuary (17th), while there were 40 Redshank at the Alaw estuary (17th) and 36 at Traeth Dulas (17th).  There were an estimated 500 Common Snipe at RSPB Cors Ddyga (15th), with 12 also being seen on The Range, Holyhead (16th).  A Jack Snipe was at RSPB Cors Ddyga (19th), while Woodcock were seen at the former Octel factory site, Amlwch Port (13th), The Range, Holyhead (16th) and South Stack (16th).

Intro:

… the finer points of sub-species identification …

Passerines and others:

A Black Redstart was at the Mackenzie Pier, Holyhead (6th) and 10+ Water Pipits were seen to fly out of the marsh at RSPB Cors Ddyga at dawn (10th) though none are understood to have been seen in an area where they might be watched.  There were several sightings of Common Chiffchaff – with birds at Traeth Lligwy (6th), Penrhos Coastal Park (9th), Llyn Coron (11th) and at the Octel / Amlwch Port water treatment plant (10th&12th).  At least 2 of the birds were possibly of the Tristis sub-species although it is always difficult to be certain unless the bird calls.

Common Chiffchaff, possibly of Tristis sub-species, Octel / Amlwch Port Water Treatment Plant, 10th November.

A Cetti’s Warbler was at Llyn Cerrig Bach, near RSPB Valley wetlands (11th) and a Blackcap was at the Octel / Amlwch Port water treatment plant (12th).  There were a number of late sightings of Barn Swallow, with 1 at Holyhead (6th), 1 at Penrhos (7th), 1 at Bull Bay (11th) and 1 at Llyn Coron (11th).

It was a good week for finches with 22 Brambling over South Stack (11th), 4-5 Brambling on coastal fields between Aberffraw dunes and Bodorgan (11th) and 2+ Brambling calling over Octel, Amlwch Port (2+ on 11th, 1 on 10th).  10 Siskin were at Penrhos Coastal Park (9th).  Up to 1641 Woodpigeon were seen over South Stack (1641 on 11th, 92 on 10th), while a Hooded Crow was also seen (9th, 11th).  Good numbers of Fieldfare, Redwing and continental Blackbirds continue to be seen.
