Saturday 2nd October – Friday 8th October

Intro:

Sabine’s ….

Gulls and Terns:

A windy week, with winds often coming in from the North-West, meant that reports from seawatching contributed a significant element of the week’s news.  The highlights were Sabine’s Gulls and Leach’s Petrels (see later).  It had been a quiet year for Sabine’s Gulls when compared to last year, but sightings on the 6th sought to address that imbalance with at least 3 birds – an adult past Point Lynas, an adult past Octel, Amlwch, an adult past Cemlyn and a juvenile past Cemlyn.  The timing of the sightings of the adult bird at Cemlyn and that from Octel meant that at least 2 different birds were involved.

Other notable gulls included 3 Little Gulls seen off Cemlyn (6th).  42 Mediterranean Gulls were at Beddmanarch Bay (2nd) and 3 were seen off Cemlyn (6th).  449 Kittiwakes were counted passing Cemlyn (6th) over the course of a 4hr seawatch.  Sightings of terns off Octel, Amlwch included 2 Arctic Terns (5th) and 6 Sandwich Terns (6th).

Seabirds:

Just the single report of a Leach’s Petrel, with 1 off Point Lynas (6th).  Sightings of Arctic Skuas included 1 past Cemlyn (3rd), 2 past Bull Bay (5th) and 2 past Cemlyn (6th).  Reports of Great Skua included 1 past Octel, Amlwch & then presumably the same bird past Bull Bay (5th), 1 past Cemlyn (5th) and 2 past Cemlyn (6th).  30 Manx Shearwater flew past The Range in 1hr (3rd), with 7 past Bull Bay (5th).  67 Gannets passed Cemlyn (6th), as did 3 Black Guillemots (6th).

Divers & Grebes:

3 Great Northern Diver flew past Cemlyn (5th), with 1 the following day (6th).   Sightings of Red-throated Diver included 1 past Cemlyn (3rd), 3 past Octel, Amlwch and then presumably the same past Bull Bay (5th), 9 past Cemlyn (5th) and 21 past Cemlyn (6th).  10 Great Crested Grebe were at Llyn Alaw (3rd).

Swans, Geese & Ducks:

The headline bird in terms of waterfowl was an eclipse adult drake Ring-necked Duck found at Llyn Alaw (4th) and seen the following day (5th).  Whilst not reported subsequently, there have recently been >600 Tufted Duck on the reservoir so it may well still be hiding among other waterfowl waiting to be relocated. The report has been considered and accepted by the Welsh Birds Rarity Committee - a subcommittee of the Welsh Ornithological Society - which considers scarce species which it defines as those occurring on average five times or fewer annually in Wales. Ken Croft advises that it is only the second American duck to be found and reported from Llyn Alaw – the 1st being a Green-winged Teal in 1984 - quite a meagre return for such a large body of water and it is perhaps illustrative of how little scrutiny the area has had over recent years.

A Pink-footed Goose was with c. 175 Greylags on fields west of Pont Bulkeley near RSPB Cors Ddyga (7th), while Pale-bellied Brent Geese featured in seawatching returns with 38 past Cemlyn (5th-7th) and 1 past Octel, Amlwch (6th).  15 Pale-bellied Brent Geese were also on the Alaw estuary (10th).

Returning to Llyn Alaw, the reservoir also held c. 40 Gadwall (3rd), c. 30 Shoveler (3rd), c. 350 Teal (3rd), c. 300 Coot (3rd) and 3 Goosander (6th).  Sightings of Wigeon included c. 30 at Llyn Alaw (3rd) and 26 at Traeth Dulas (4th).

And back to seawatching returns, a drake Eider flew past Cemlyn (5th & 6th), while up to 358 Common Scoter flew past Cemlyn (5th), with 164 past the following day (6th).

Waders:

1, possibly 2, Little Stints continued to be seen at Llyn Alaw (4th, 6th).  There were c. 70 Golden Plover at Cemlyn (3rd) and 3 on the Alaw estuary (10th) where they are fairly uncommon.  2 Grey Plover were on the Alaw estuary (10th) and up to 7 Ringed Plover were at Llyn Alaw (7 on 6th, 2 on 3rd).  A Jack Snipe was at RSPB Cors Ddyga (7th), while 2 Common Snipe were at Llyn (3rd).  A Purple Sandpiper was at Cemlyn (3rd) and 11 Dunlin were at Llyn Alaw (6th).

51 Bar-tailed Godwits were on the Alaw estuary (10th) and up to 12 Black-tailed Godwit were at Llyn Alaw (12 on 6th, 3 on 4th).  2 Ruff were at Llyn Alaw (6th), while 2 Greenshank were at Traeth Dulas (4th).

Passerines and others:

A very quiet week for passerines, with the unexpected highlight being a very noticeable movement of Eurasian Jays which turned up at both unexpected locations and in unusual numbers.  Sightings included 3 at South Stack (3rd), 11 at The Range (4th), 5 over Octel, Amlwch (4th), 37 at the Inland Sea in 2 flocks of 22 and 15 (4th), 21 over RSPB Cors Ddyga (5th), 6 over Hen Borth (10th), 3 over Rhoscolyn (10th) and 5 over Wylfa woods (10th).

Herons, Egrets and allies:

Llyn Alaw continued to be the stronghold for Great Egrets with up to 5 (5 on 4th, 2 on 3rd, 4 on 6th) while singles were seen at the Inland Sea (3rd) and Cemlyn (6th).  11 Little Egrets were at Traeth Dulas (4th).

Raptors:

A Goshawk was seen over Church Bay (6th), with a Red Kite seen over woodland near Llyn Llywenan (6th).

Saturday 25th September – Friday 1st October

Intro:

A trio of skuas; a trio of divers …

Seabirds:

The latter part of the week brought some north-westerly winds and with it some quality seabirds.  Top of the bill were 2 new additions to the Anglesey year list – a Leach’s Petrel seen off Cemlyn (29th) and a juvenile Long-tailed Skua off Point Lynas (1st).  There were reasonably good numbers of Arctic Skuas with up to 9 past Point Lynas (9 on 29th, 4 on 28th, 1 on 1st), 1 past Llam Carw, Amlwch Port (29th) and 2 past Cemlyn (29th).  Sightings of Great Skua included 1 past Cemlyn (29th), 3 past Point Lynas (1st) and 1 past South Stack (1st).  There were still a few Manx Shearwaters to be seen with 74 past Cemlyn (29th), 9 past Llam Carw (29th), 8 past South Stack (1st) and up to 6 past Point Lynas (4 on 28th, 6 on 1st).  310 Gannets were counted past Cemlyn during a 3hr seawatch (29th).  There was just the 1 report of Black Guillemot; a bird at Cemlyn (29th).

Divers & Grebes:

Any week with 3 species of diver is a good one and this was particularly so given that we have just moved into the autumn proper.  Matters were helped by two species being found unexpectedly at Beddmanarch Bay (25th) – a partial summer plumaged Black-throated Diver together with 2 Great Northern Diver which again retained a good proportion of their summer plumage.  The trio of divers was completed by 2 Red-throated Divers that were seen to fly past Point Lynas (28th), with 6 past Cemlyn (29th) and 7 past South Stack (1st).  11 Great Crested Grebes were seen at Beddmanarch Bay (27th).

Waders:

The lower water levels at Llyn Alaw not only continued to hold last week’s Pectoral Sandpiper which was seen on most days (25th-27th, 29th-30th), but also pulled in a number of other waders including 2 Wood Sandpiper (25th) and 3 Little Stint (25th).

A Green Sandpiper was on the Alaw estuary (28th, 1st) and 5 Purple Sandpiper were at Trearddur Bay (25th).  Sightings of Knot included 9 at Beddmanarch Bay (28th) and up to 4 on the Alaw estuary (4 on 1st, 2 on 28th).  Relatively few Dunlin were reported with just 41 at Beddmanarch Bay (28th) and 5 on the Alaw estuary (28th).  5 Grey Plover were on the Alaw estuary (1st), approximately 60-70 Golden Plover were on the Cefni estuary, Malltraeth (25th) and 3 Ringed Plover were on the Alaw estuary (28th).  7 Common Snipe flew over Rhoscolyn (30th).

Sightings of Bar-tailed Godwit included up to 58 on the Alaw estuary (58 on 28th, 51 on 1st), 28 at Beddmanarch Bay (28th) and 2 at Traeth Dulas (26th, 28th-29th).  Up to 16 Black-tailed Godwit were at Llyn Alaw (16 on 25th, 12 on 26th), with 4 at Malltraeth cob pool (25th), 4 at RSPB Cors Ddyga (26th) and up to 2 at the Alaw estuary (2 on 28th, 1 on 1st).  Up to 5 Ruff were seen at Llyn Alaw (5 on 27th, 3 on 25th-26th), with 1 on fields opposite Malltraeth cob pool (25th) and 1 on the Alaw estuary (28th).  Up to 13 Greenshank were on the Alaw estuary (13 on 1st, 6 on 28th), 7 were at the Pentraeth end of Red Wharf Bay (26th) and 3 were at Traeth Dulas (27th).  25 Redshank were on the Alaw estuary (28th), with 12 at Traeth Dulas (27th).  There were up to 131 Curlew at Traeth Dulas (131 on 29th, 83 on 27th) and 68 on the Alaw estuary (28th).  The latter site also held 332 Oystercatcher (28th).

Gulls and Terns:

A juvenile Sabine’s Gull and a Little Gull were seen off Point Lynas (1st), while sightings of Mediterranean Gulls included 32 at the Alaw estuary (1st), 21 at Beddmanarch Bay (28th) and 1 at Traeth Dulas (29th).  At least 1500 Kittiwakes were seen over a 2 ½ hour seawatch off Point Lynas (1st), while 167 were seen during a 3-hour seawatch from Cemlyn (29th).  21 Arctic Terns were seen off Point Lynas (1st), with 2 off South Stack (1st) and 1 off Cemlyn (29th).   30 Sandwich Terns were at Porth y Mor, near Traeth Lligwy (26th), with 9 seen off Cemlyn (29th).

Swans, Geese & Ducks:

Up to 10 Barnacle Geese continue to be seen feeding in fields north of Llyn Alaw (10 on 27th, 6 on 26th, 4 on 30th).  The Dark-bellied Brent Goose was seen again at Beddmanarch Bay (25th, 28th), with up to 22 Pale-bellied Brent Geese at Beddmanarch Bay (22 on 25th, 16 on 28th) and 7 on the Inland Sea as viewed from Four mile bridge (30th).

The number of wintering ducks continue to build and there were a number of reports of returning Goldeneye with 1 seen to fly past Point Lynas (28th) and another at Beddmanarch Bay (28th).  15 Goosander were seen to fly on to the Alaw estuary (1st).  327 Teal were counted at Beddmanarch Bay (28th), with 90 on the Alaw estuary (28th).  Beddmanarch Bay also held up to 33 Pintail (33 on 27th, 12 on 28th) and 338 Wigeon (28th).  Let’s hope that the Wigeon seen on Fair Isle are heading for the balmy climate of Anglesey and that they bring the eclipse Baikal Teal along with them … now that would be a nice surprise!

Passerines and others:

A very quiet week for passerines, which was no doubt down to the wet and windy weather conditions.  A Hooded Crow was at The Range, Holyhead (25th), with a Kingfisher at the Llanfachraeth end of the Alaw estuary (25th).

Herons, Egrets and allies:

Up to 8 Great Egret continue to be seen at Llyn Alaw (8 on 25th, 7 on 26th), with 1 on the Inland Sea (25th, 28th).  22 Little Egrets were counted at the Pentraeth end of Red Wharf Bay (26th).

Raptors:

Reports of Red Kite included 2 birds near RSPB Cors Ddyga (26th), 1 at Traeth Dulas (29th) and 1 north of Rhosmeirch (1st).

Forthcoming week – 2nd October – 8th October?

A week firmly lodged in Anglesey birding folklore, in that it includes two American Passerines at South Stack, a UK first in the form of a Grey Catbird (4th) in 2001 and a Red-eyed Vireo on the same date.  There have been two Red-breasted Flycatchers, both at the Breakwater Country Park, the first on the 2nd in 2007 and the second on the 8th in 2005.  A Short-toed Lark was at Cemlyn (7th) in 2014 and an Alpine Swift was at South Stack (8th) in 1960.

Waders have included 2 Red-necked Phalaropes, with one at Penmon Pool (2nd) in 1998 and a historical record of one at Valley (5th) in 1893.  An American Golden Plover was at the Alaw estuary (8th) in 2004.

Finally, there was a Glossy Ibis at Malltraeth (2nd) in 1945.

Saturday 18th September – Friday 24th September 2021

Intro:

Once upon a time many, many years ago - or at least it feels that way - Llyn Alaw was one of Anglesey’s best birding sites.  Car parking was available at a number of access points and there was a trail through a conifer plantation to an elevated hide which gave great views across the north-eastern end of the reservoir.  Water levels were regularly low over summer months which drew in rare and scarce waders.  Through misfortune or other means the site - which is Anglesey’s biggest body of fresh water - has almost become impenetrable to birders and water levels have remained high.  The aforementioned trail is blocked by fallen conifers that defy even herculean efforts to pass.  Whilst the reservoir has undoubtedly maintained its power to pull in birds, very few have ventured there and it is fair to say that the site has become under-watched.  That is, until this week when news was shared on Wednesday that the water levels had been allowed to fall to facilitate engineering work on the dam such that there was now a wide muddy shoreline around the reservoir.  That was a more than sufficient invitation for birders to visit, particularly in the hope of finding a rare or scarce American wader given that there have been good numbers of Pectoral Sandpipers across the UK and a smattering of both Baird’s and Buff-breasted Sandpipers.  It didn’t take long to deliver.

Waders:

First up in the wader fest was a Pectoral Sandpiper found at Llyn Alaw (24th) on just the 3rd day following notification of the lower water levels.  Other scarce waders included 2 Little Stint also at Llyn Alaw (23rd), with 3 Curlew Sandpiper at Malltraeth cob pool (21st) and 1 on the Cefni estuary, Malltraeth (23rd).  A Green Sandpiper was on the flooded field at Tyn Llan, Cemlyn (20th) and a Common Sandpiper was at Holyhead Harbour (23rd).

6 Purple Sandpiper were on rocky islands off Trearddur Bay - opposite the Cliff Hotel - (22nd) and up to 20+ Turnstone were between Cemlyn and Henborth (20+ on 18th, 2 on 19th).  Sightings of Knot included 14 on the Alaw estuary (21st), 4 off the Penrhos Coastal Park (22nd) and 1 at Llyn Alaw (22nd).  8 Sanderling were at the Alaw estuary (21st), while sightings of Dunlin included up to 70 at Llyn Alaw (70 on 22nd, 6 on 23rd), 20 at the Alaw estuary (21st) and 2 at Traeth Dulas (22nd).

Reports of Grey Plover included 4 on the Cefni estuary, Malltraeth (22nd) and 2 on the Alaw estuary (21st).  Up to 9 Golden Plover were seen at Cemlyn (9 on 18th, 3 on 19th), with 1 at Llyn Alaw (22nd).  2 Ringed Plover were on the Alaw estuary (21st), with 1 at Llyn Alaw (23rd).

24 Bar-tailed Godwit were on the Alaw estuary (21st), with 13 at Cemlyn (18th) and 9 at Malltraeth (22nd).  Up to 30 Black-tailed Godwit were at Llyn Alaw (30 on 22nd, 11 on 23rd), 16 at Malltraeth (22nd), 6 at Malltraeth cob pool (21st) and 1 was on the Alaw estuary (21st).  There was a very good count of up to 16 Ruff at Llyn Alaw (16 on 22nd, 6 on 23rd), with 2 at Cemlyn (18th) and 2 at the Alaw estuary (18th, 23rd).  13 Greenshank were on the Alaw estuary (21st), with 12 at Llyn Penrhyn (21st) and up to 4 at Traeth Dulas (4 on 23rd, 2 on 21st).  There were up to 15 Redshank at Traeth Dulas (15 on 23rd, 12 on 21st) and 10 on the Alaw estuary (21st).

2 Whimbrel were seen at Cemlyn (18th), with counts of Curlew including 170 birds on the Alaw estuary (21st) and 43 at Cymyran (21st).  215 Oystercatcher were on the Alaw estuary (21st) and 36 were at Cymyran (21st).  Reports of Common Snipe included 4 at Llyn Llywenan (20th), 4 at Parys Mountain (20th), 5 at Plas Bog (21st), 4 at Cors Bodeilio and 4 at Llyn Alaw (23rd).

Swans, Geese & Ducks:

23 Mute Swans were at the dam at Llyn Alaw (22nd).  7 Pink-footed Geese flew over Malltraeth cob pool (21st) – the 1st of the autumn.  11 Barnacle Geese were at Llyn Alaw (23rd-24th), with 2 at Llyn Llywenan (20th, 24th).  The presumed Lesser Snow Goose x Barnacle Goose hybrid was also at Llyn Llywenan (20th).  A Dark-bellied Brent Goose was at the Inland Sea (19th), then the same or another off Penrhos Coastal Park (22nd).  Up to 23 Pale-bellied Brent Geese were off Penrhos Coastal Park (23 on 24th, 10 on 22nd), with 4 at the Inland Sea (19th) and 2 at Cemlyn (23rd).  Llyn Alaw also held 436 Greylag Geese (23rd) and 83 Canada Geese (23rd).

Passerines and others:

A European Turtle Dove was found in Cemaes Bay on the evening of the 17th and was seen on most days subsequently (18th-19th, 21st, 23rd-24th).  This is still a scarce sighting on Anglesey, but the last 3 years have been particularly good with at least 3 sightings in each year.  It is interesting to speculate whether the September sighting is the same or a different bird to that photographed in a garden at Cemaes Bay on the 6th March 2021.  Have we had a resident bird and if so where has it been hiding?

Northern Wheatears continue to be seen with 8 at The Range, South Stack (19th), up to 6 at South Stack (6 on 18th, 4 on 21st), 1 at Gadfa (22nd) and 1 at Soldiers Point, Holyhead (23rd).

…Garganey galore …

Swans, Geese & Ducks:

Garganey can be difficult to catch up with on Anglesey, so 6 birds was a particularly good weekly count with 1 on the mitigation pool, Inland Sea (12th,16th-17th), 1 at Llyn Maelog (11th) and 4 at the Cefni reservoir (16th).  There were also good numbers of Teal with counts of 478 at Beddmanarch Bay (16th) and 172 at the Alaw estuary (16th).

Returning to Swans and Geese to maintain order, there were 13 Mute Swans at the Cefni reservoir (16th), while sightings of returning Pale-bellied Brent Geese included 5 birds at Cymyran (12th), up to 8 at the Inland Sea (8 on 15th, 2 on 17th) and 2 at Beddmanarch Bay (16th).  The number of Wigeon continues to increase with 97 at Beddmanarch Bay (16th), 22 at the Cefni reservoir (16th), 5 at Malltraeth cob pool (15th) and 3 at Llyn Maelog (11th).  There was only the 1 report of Pintail, involving 3 birds at Malltraeth cob pool (15th).  There were 17 Shoveler at the Cefni reservoir (16th), with 6 on Malltraeth cob pool (15th).  Cefni reservoir (16th) also held 42 Gadwall, 309 Mallard, 1 Pochard, 11 Tufted Duck and 188 Coot.  81 Common Scoter flew past Cemlyn (12th), 3 Goosander were on Llyn Maelog (11th) and 19 Red-breasted Merganser were at the Inland Sea (13th).

… passerines in the ascendancy …

Passerines and others:

Whilst there were still some good waders about, the main thrust of the week’s news moved towards passerines with some good sightings particularly towards the end of the week.  A juvenile Rose-coloured Starling found at Amlwch Port (9th – 10th) by @atypicalbirder was undoubtedly the star bird in terms of national scarcity, but it is interesting to note that in the context of Anglesey both a Redstart at South Stack (9th) and Pied Flycatchers at Rhoscolyn (9th) and Holyhead (10th) are scarcer.  In what has been a good year for Rose-coloured Starlings, Anglesey has had 12 birds (assuming no duplication), whilst there have been only 6 sightings of Redstart (also a good year) and just the 2 Pied Flycatchers!  The last few days of the week delivered a number of Spotted Flycatchers, with 1 at Wylfa woods (8th), 4 birds at South Stack (9th), 1 bird at Rhoscolyn (10th), 5 birds at Cemlyn (10th), 7 birds at Holyhead Breakwater Country Park (10th) and 2 birds in a Holyhead private garden (10th) .  A Tree Pipit was at Rhoscolyn (9th).

… Little Stints and Curlew Sandpipers delight ….

Waders:

Little Stint had over recent years become somewhat of a scarce sighting on Anglesey.  Perhaps the easterly bias to the winds has helped, but whatever the reason they have showed up in good numbers this year.  Whilst there is a potential that some birds may have been seen at multiple sites - Inland Sea – Beddmanarch Bay – Alaw estuary and the Cefni estuary – Malltraeth Cob pool, there must have been a minimum of 7 birds involved.  Sightings included up to 4 birds on Malltraeth cob pool (4 on 1st, 3 on 2nd-3rd), 3 birds at Beddmanarch Bay from Stanley embankment (2nd), up to 2 birds at the Alaw estuary (2 on 3rd, 1 on 1st), 1 bird on the Inland Sea (31st) and 1 bird on the Cefni estuary, Malltraeth (29th, 31st).

And to round things off, it is not too late for a scarce tern with a White-winged Black Tern at Llyn Trafwll (8th) in 1998 which was in the company of 8 Black Terns.
