Week: Saturday 22nd June 2024 – Friday 28th June 2024.

Main theme for the week was an early sign of returning waders with Greenshank, Common Sandpiper, Redshank, Whimbrel and a growing number of Curlew all featuring in reports.

 

Swans, Geese & Ducks:

Eider

·       5 off Benllech seafront – including 3 juveniles (22nd).

Waders:

Common Sandpiper

·       2 at Beddmanarch Bay (27th).

·       7 at the Alaw estuary (28th).

Golden Plover

·       1 on the Trwyn, Cemlyn (23rd).

Turnstone

·       5 on the Trwyn, Cemlyn (23rd).

Greenshank

·       3 at the Alaw estuary (28th).

·       Summer plumaged bird at Traeth Dulas (28th).

Redshank

·       4 at Cemlyn (26th).

·       Up to 9 at the Alaw estuary (9 on 27th, 5 on 28th) – up from just the 1 last week.

Whimbrel

·       1 at the Alaw estuary (28th).

Black-tailed Godwit

·       1 at Cors Ddyga (23rd).

·       7 at Malltraeth (24th).

Curlew

·       30 at Cemlyn (26th).

·       Up to 120 at the Alaw estuary (120 on 28th, 21 on 27th).

Oystercatcher

·       Up to 116 at the Alaw estuary (116 on 28th, 79 on 27th).

Seabirds & gulls:

Arctic Skua

·       1 off Benllech seafront (22nd).

Mediterranean Gull

·       2 adults, 1 2nd calendar year and juvenile at Cemlyn (23rd).

Black Guillemot

·       Up to 4 off Benllech seafront (4 on 22nd, 1 on 23rd).

Divers & Grebes:

No sightings of note

 

Passerines & others:

Common Crossbill

·       1 flew over Y Graig, Llangefni (25th).

·       3 at the Plantation, South Stack (26th).

Lesser Whitethroat

·       2 near Cemlyn (23rd).

Grasshopper Warbler

·       1 at Cors Erddreiniog (23rd).

Kingfisher

·       1 at Cors Erddreiniog (23rd).

Hooded Crow

·       1 at The Range, Holyhead (26th).

·       Up to 3 Hooded x Carrion hybrids (3 on 28th, 1 on 23rd).

Raptors:

Hobby

·       1 at Cors Ddyga (22nd – 23rd).

Osprey

·       1 at Cors Ddyga (26th).

Marsh Harrier

·       Male at Cors Ddyga (23rd).

·       Female at Cors Erddreiniog (23rd).

Red Kite

·       1 at Gadfa (25th & 27th).

Herons, Egrets & allies:

Cattle Egret

·        Up to 2 at Cors Ddyga (2 on 25th, 1 on 23rd & 26th).

Great Egret

·        Up to 5 at Cors Ddyga (5 on 26th, 2 on 23rd).

·        1 flew east over Wylfa power station (23rd).

·        2 at Llyn Trafwll (25th).

Week: Saturday 15th June 2024 – Friday 21st June 2024.

There was a belated report of a Dotterel at Rhoscolyn on the 11th May which takes the year to date total up to 206.  In what was a quiet week, there was still a bit of variety with an unseasonal Black Redstart, 2 Arctic Skua, a feral Snow Goose, 2 sightings of Hobby and at least 3 – possibly 5 - Great Egret.

 

Swans, Geese & Ducks:

Snow Goose

·       1 at Cemlyn and then flew to Hen Borth (20th).

Common Scoter

·       24 flew past The Range (17th).

Waders:

Dotterel

·       Belated report of 1 at Rhoscolyn on the 11th May.

Redshank

·       1 at the Alaw estuary (18th) was the 1st returning bird.

Common Ringed Plover

·       16 at the Alaw estuary (18th).

Sanderling

·       1 at the Alaw estuary (18th).

Dunlin

·       12 at the Alaw estuary (18th).

Curlew

·       13 at the Alaw estuary (18th).

Oystercatcher

·       112 at the Alaw estuary (18th).

Seabirds & gulls:

Arctic Skua

·       2 flew past The Range (17th).

Mediterranean Gull

·       2 adults and 1 chick at Cemlyn (19th).

Common Gull

·       2nd calendar year bird still at the Alaw estuary (18th).

Sandwich Tern

·       139 chicks ringed at Cemlyn and fitted with orange flags – most 3 letters E** (19th).

Puffin

·       5 at South Stack (16th).

Black Guillemot

·       3 adults and 2 downy chicks ringed at Holyhead – two nests with two eggs and a nest box in use again (19th).

Divers & Grebes:

·       1 at Cemlyn (19th).

·       1 at Pentraeth (19th).

·       1 at Cors Ddyga (20th).

Marsh Harrier

·       Female at the Alaw estuary (18th).

·       Male at Cors Ddyga (20th).

Red Kite

·       1 over Beddmanarch Bay (15th).

·       1 over Moel-y-Don (16th).

·       1 at Gadfa (16th, 18th & 19th).

·       1 over Penysarn (17th).

·       1 over a cut silage field at Talwrn (17th).

·       1 over the A5025, 1 mile south of Pentraeth (17th).

·       2 over minffordd road, Caergeiliog (19th).

·       1 over Llangefni (21st).

·       1 over Talwrn (21st).

Herons, Egrets & allies:

Cattle Egret

·        3 at Cors Ddyga – 3rd field down from 1st bridge (17th).

Great Egret

·        At least up to 3 – but possibly 5 - at Cors Ddyga (3 on 19th & 20th, 1 on 17th).
